Hotel prices by country – why they differ and how to book cheaper
Anyone who has booked a hotel may know the phenomenon: the same room, the same travel dates – and yet the booking site shows a different price depending on the country. In this guide we explain why that happens, what the legal position is, and how to compare fairly for your actual trip instead of trusting blanket promises.
Why does the same room cost different amounts in different countries?
Large booking platforms such as Booking.com present prices regionally. The amount shown depends, among other things, on which country the request comes from. Several factors are behind this: differing purchasing power and price levels in the target markets, exchange rates and the currency displayed, local demand and competition, and country-specific marketing campaigns and discounts. The way taxes and fees are shown also differs: in some countries the price appears inclusive of all charges, in others taxes are added separately.
The result: for one and the same stay, noticeably different prices can arise depending on "which country you are looking from". A comparison is therefore only meaningful if all amounts are set side by side including taxes and fees and in the same currency.
Is it allowed to compare and book this way?
Comparing publicly visible prices is completely normal and everyday – price comparison sites do nothing else. Actually booking from another country, for example through a VPN, is a legal grey area and depends on the particular terms of the booking platform. Within the EU there is the so-called Geo-blocking Regulation, which is intended to limit discrimination against customers based on where they live; how it applies in an individual case is complex, however. This guide is not legal advice – using a VPN is at your own responsibility and subject to the applicable terms of the platform and the VPN provider.
How to check whether your stay is cheaper elsewhere
That is exactly what GeoRates is for. You simply paste the link to the hotel you want on Booking.com, choose the room, the board type and the cancellation condition – and we automatically retrieve the publicly displayed price for that room through sessions from several countries. All prices are converted including taxes and at the current exchange rate into euros, so you can see at a glance whether the same stay is cheaper when viewed from another country. VPN – what to watch out for
If a lower price turns up via another country, in practice it can often only be obtained with a VPN from that country. Keep a few points in mind: check the payment currency and any foreign currency fees on your card, check the cancellation conditions, and make sure it really is the same room and the same dates. A card with favourable currency conversion can avoid additional conversion costs. The note about using a VPN is purely informational.
Practical tips for a fair price comparison
- Always compare including taxes and fees – otherwise a price looks cheaper than it turns out to be.
- Make sure the room category and board type are identical (for example breakfast included versus for a surcharge).
- Check the cancellation conditions: "free cancellation" is often somewhat more expensive than "non-refundable".
- Keep an eye on the payment currency and the exchange rate.
- To be safe, take a screenshot of the offer you intend to book.
Frequently asked questions
Are hotels really cheaper from another country?
Sometimes yes, often not. Whether a difference arises depends on the hotel, the travel dates and the platform – which is why it is worth comparing for your particular case.
Do I need a VPN in order to compare?
No. For comparing, GeoRates retrieves the publicly displayed prices from several countries for you. You only need a VPN if you want to book from another country yourself.
Is GeoRates free?
Yes. The automatic price check is free and can be used without signing up.
Does GeoRates book for me?
No. GeoRates is an independent comparison tool and has no partnership with Booking.com. You make the booking yourself, directly on the platform.
