Booking from Japan on Booking.com: how much can you actually save?
Japan does not stand out in our log because it wins most often. The USA was the cheapest country 42 times by at least 1%, India 30 times, Japan 22 times. When Japan does win, the saving is higher on average than for those more frequent countries: 12.8% on average, 11.0% median, one case of 38.1%. Argentina’s average is higher at 17.7%, but on only 5 hits. Japan is not a country to switch to blindly. It is one worth checking when the stay is expensive.
What our measurements show
The log covers 223 checks with a result from 16 Sep to 4 Nov 2026, almost all starting from Germany, across 139 hotels. GeoRates requests the same room, the same board, the same cancellation terms and the same dates from 15 country sessions in the same run, including taxes and fees, in euros. We do not count a gap below 1% as a find.
- On hits of 1% or more, Japan was the cheapest country 22 times. Across all 223 checks Japan was listed as the best country 40 times. The difference is cases below 1%, mostly rounding and not a real lead.
- On those 22 hits the saving averaged 12.8%, with a median of 11.0% and a maximum of 38.1%. 12.8% is the average of those hits, not of every check. Across all checks with a result the median was 2.2%.
- More often, but lower on average: the USA 42 hits at 6.7%, India 30 at 8.4%, Colombia 19 at 6.0% (median there only 1.5%). Forums often call Colombia a bargain country; in this log the typical hit is small.
- Argentina averaged 17.7% across 5 hits, including an outlier of 51.1% (€400.01 → €195.58, a hotel in Thailand, 20 Sep 2026). Peru averaged 11.7% across 4 hits, below Japan.
- A concrete find on 20 Sep 2026, after the method correction: €267 at the start, €165.22 via Japan. That is €101.78 and the 38.1% recorded in the log. It is the highest Japan figure in the log, not the typical one.
On 18 Sep 2026 the measurement gained a Genius correction. Before that (83 result rows, 16–18 Sep) the share with at least 1% saving was 55.4%, the average 5.61% and the median 3.3%. From 19 Sep (140 rows) the figures were 62.1%, average 4.46%, median 2.1%. That is for all countries together. In the narrower window from 19 Sep (140 checks) Japan was the cheapest country by at least 1% only 6 times, average 12.0%, median 8.5%, maximum still 38.1%. The 22 hits and the 12.8% on this page refer to the whole log from 16 Sep, including the days before the correction. The narrower table is in the country ranking. 19 rows later carry a Genius flag; earlier rows cannot be checked that way.
In short: when Japan wins in this log, the gap is larger on average than for the USA, India or Colombia. Whether that is true for your hotel only a check of that exact room can say. The largest euro saving in the log was not via Japan but via India: €553.54 on 17 Sep 2026, before the correction (€2,873.40 → €2,319.86).
Why Japan is sometimes cheaper
We do not know for certain. A plausible explanation is that hotels can set discounts for specific countries and regions on Booking.com (Booking.com for Partners). We only measure what the session displays. Exchange rates, rounded conversions and discounts that appear in only some sessions can also look like a country price.
Caveats
- Savings are not always stable. In the whole log 15 rows are marked “not stable” and 33 “stable”. The mark is not broken down by country, so not for Japan either. We cannot say how many of the 22 Japan hits would have survived a second fetch.
- 22 hits are a small sample. The median of 11.0% sits close to the average of 12.8%; the single 38.1% case still pulls the average up. Neither figure is a promise for the next booking.
- Inside the EU, switching country usually does nothing because of the Geo-blocking Regulation (Verbraucherzentrale, EUR-Lex). Japan is outside the EEA, so a Japan session is not covered by that rule. Switching from Germany to Spain stays uninteresting.
How to book a Japan price
- Check your hotel with GeoRates. Only if Japan is shown as cheaper is the rest worth doing.
- Connect a VPN to a server in Japan and open Booking.com in a private window, so old cookies do not overwrite the country.
- Check the room, the board, the cancellation terms and the final price including taxes. A non-refundable rate is not a fair comparison with a flexible one.
- Pay in yen (JPY) with a card that has no foreign-currency fee, and decline Booking’s euro conversion. If you are charged in yen, an ordinary bank card can add a foreign-usage fee and an exchange-rate markup. Part of the saving can disappear there.
- If the rate says “residents of Japan only”, do not book it.
A worked example from the log
20 Sep 2026, after the Genius correction: €267 at the start, €165.22 via Japan, so €101.78 (38.1%) less. VPN costs come off that if you do not already have a subscription, and so do any card fees. It is the highest Japan figure in the log. The median of the 22 hits is 11.0%, not 38%.

Frequently asked questions
Is Booking.com always cheaper from Japan?
No. In 22 of 223 checks with a result Japan was the cheapest country by at least 1%. In 40 of 223 it was listed as the best country; the rest of those were below 1% and we do not count them as a find.
How much can I save when Japan wins?
On those 22 hits the average was 12.8%, the median 11.0%, and the maximum 38.1% (20 Sep 2026, €267 to €165.22). That average is for the whole log from 16 Sep. In the narrower window from 19 Sep there are 6 hits, average 12.0% and median 8.5%.
Are other countries cheaper more often, or by more on average?
The USA (42 times, average 6.7%) and India (30 times, average 8.4%) were cheaper more often. Argentina’s average was higher (17.7%), but on only 5 hits. Which country leads for your hotel depends on the offer.
Is a VPN into an EU country worth it to get the Japan price?
No. The Geo-blocking Regulation forbids different prices by place of residence inside the EU. Japan is outside the EEA. You do not need a VPN to compare. You need a VPN with a server in Japan only if you want to book the price you found yourself.
Which currency should I pay in?
In yen (JPY), with a card that has no foreign-currency fee. The conversion into euros that Booking offers is usually more expensive.
Is this allowed?
Using a VPN is legal in Germany. Whether a specific rate applies to you is in the booking conditions. Do not book rates that expressly apply only to residents of Japan. This is not legal advice.
