Which country is cheapest on Booking.com? Our ranking
We looked at which countries most often returned the lowest price for exactly the same room in GeoRates checks. The basis is 140 checks with a result from 19 Sep to 4 Nov 2026, after the Genius correction of 18 Sep. The starting country was usually Germany, and taxes and fees are always included. A gap below 1% does not count.
The short version
- In 62.1% of checks another country was at least 1% cheaper, and in 32 cases (22.9%) at least 10% cheaper.
- The median saving across all checks was only 2.1%, and the average was 4.46%. Large jumps are the exception.
Ranking: how often was each country the cheapest?
| # | Country | Hits | Median | Avg. | Max |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | USA | 31 | 5.7% | 7.0% | 27.3% |
| 2 | India | 20 | 7.8% | 7.2% | 11.3% |
| 3 | Colombia | 13 | 1.5% | 3.6% | 17.1% |
| 4 | Japan | 6 | 8.5% | 12.0% | 38.1% |
| 5 | Argentina | 5 | 9.0% | 17.7% | 51.1% |
| 6 | Peru | 4 | 9.5% | 11.7% | 20.8% |
| 7 | Egypt | 2 | 7.8% | 7.8% | 9.8% |
| 7 | Pakistan | 2 | 13.4% | 13.4% | 14.9% |
Hits of at least 1% saving, and only when that country was the cheapest. 140 checks, 19 Sep–4 Nov 2026. Median, average and maximum refer to those hits, not to every check. Egypt and Pakistan are tied for 7th.
Ahead once each: the Philippines (15.1%), Mexico (14.4%), Sri Lanka (13.9%) and Vietnam (6.5%). A single hit is not a pattern.
How to read the ranking
- USA: cheapest most often, and the saving is modest (median 5.7%). All 7 double-checked hits held. US page
- India: less often, but higher at the median (7.8%). The average of 7.2% sits below that. India page
- Colombia: often mentioned, but the median is only 1.5% (13 hits, average 3.6%, maximum 17.1%). There is no separate page for it.
- Japan: only 6 hits in this window, but then an average of 12.0% (median 8.5%, one case of 38.1%). Across the whole log from 16 Sep there are 22 hits and an average of 12.8%. Japan page
- Argentina: 5 hits, average 17.7%, one case of 51.1% (€400.01 → €195.58, a hotel in Thailand, 20 Sep 2026). Double-check outliers like that. There is no separate page.
- Egypt: in the unfiltered totals it is often “the cheapest”, but almost always only by rounding amounts below 1%. This table includes only the 2 cases of at least 1%.
The pages on country prices in general and on Japan use the whole log from 16 Sep (223 checks with a result). This ranking uses only the stretch from 19 Sep. That is why the hit counts differ there, for example Japan 22 instead of 6 and the USA 42 instead of 31.
Why no EU country appears in the ranking
Inside the EU the Geo-blocking Regulation forbids different prices by place of residence (Verbraucherzentrale, EUR-Lex). GeoRates therefore checks mainly countries outside the EU. Switching from Germany to Spain usually does nothing. An EU hotel can still be cheaper from India or the United States, because those countries are outside.
Method and limits
- Same room, same board, same cancellation terms, same dates, every country in the same run, prices including taxes and fees, in euros.
- Data only from 19 Sep 2026, so that distorted Genius displays from earlier measurements are left out. Before that (83 checks, 16–18 Sep) the share with at least 1% was 55.4%, the average 5.61% and the median 3.3%.
- Newer hits are confirmed with a second fetch. In the log 15 finds are marked not stable and 33 stable. They stay in the counts. The mark is not split by date, so we cannot say how many of the 15 fall in this window.
- The sample is small (140 checks) and depends on which hotels people check. Ranks 4 to 7 and the one-off hits are too thin to make a country the default.
Actually booking the price
Comparing on GeoRates does not need a VPN. To book, you need a server in the country that came up and, if you are charged in local currency, a card with no foreign-currency fee. The steps are in the VPN guide. Do not book rates that are only for residents of a country.
