Booking from India on Booking.com: measured numbers, not a myth
India shows up in many VPN guides as a bargain tip. We measured it: the same room, the same board, the same cancellation terms and the same dates were requested from 15 countries in the same run, always including taxes and fees. A gap below 1% does not count as a find.
What our measurements show
From the GeoRates log, only the stretch after the Genius correction: 140 checks with a result from 19 Sep to 4 Nov 2026. The starting country was almost always Germany.
- India was the cheapest country 20 times by at least 1%. Only the USA came up more often (31 times).
- Median saving: 7.8%, average 7.2%, maximum 11.3%. In 9 of the 20 cases it was 10% or more. The median sits above the average here because a few small hits pull the average down. 7.8% is the typical hit, not the average of every check.
- In euros: a median of €47.50, an average of €107.07, a maximum of €297.94.
- The India hits were mostly hotels in Thailand (6), Tanzania (6) and Spain (5).
Example confirmed as stable: a hotel in Spain cost €2,787.00 from Germany and €2,489.06 from India. That is €297.94 (10.7%) less. A second fetch confirmed the figure. Three days later the saving was still 10.6%.
For context: 4 India hits were confirmed as stable on a second fetch, and 3 were not stable. The rest date from before GeoRates double-checked every find. 7 checked cases are too few to treat the other 13 as certain.
This window is narrower than the full log from 16 Sep. There India was the cheapest country 30 times, average 8.4%, maximum 19.3%. The largest euro saving in the whole log, €553.54 on 17 Sep 2026, is before the correction and is not included here. The 11.3% and the €297.94 are the highs only from 19 Sep.
Why a hotel in Spain can be cheaper from India
The EU Geo-blocking Regulation forbids different prices by place of residence inside the EU (Verbraucherzentrale, EUR-Lex). India is outside it. Hotels may offer their own country discounts there (Booking.com for Partners). That is why even a hotel in Spain can appear cheaper from India than from Germany. Whether yours does, only the check can say.
Caveats
- Not automatic: India was the cheapest country in 20 of 140 checks, and not in the rest.
- Prices can move. Check again just before you book.
- You may be charged in rupees (INR). Card fees and a poor conversion rate then come off the saving.
- Do not book rates that say “residents of India only”.
How to book an India price
- Check the hotel on GeoRates.
- If India is ahead: connect a VPN to a server in India and open Booking.com in a private window.
- Check the room, the board, the cancellation terms and the final price.
- Pay in local currency (rupees, if that is what is offered) with a card that has no foreign-currency fee, and decline Booking’s euro conversion.
