Booking from the United States on Booking.com: cheaper more often than you’d expect
When people think of country prices they usually think of India or Colombia. In our data from 19 Sep 2026 a different country was ahead most often: the United States. Frequent does not mean large. The typical gap is small.
What our measurements show
GeoRates log, 140 checks with a result from 19 Sep to 4 Nov 2026, so after the Genius correction. The same room, the same board, the same cancellation terms, the same dates, 15 countries in the same run, always including taxes and fees. A gap below 1% does not count.
- The United States was the cheapest country 31 times by at least 1%, more often than any other country in this window.
- Median saving: 5.7%, average 7.0%, maximum 27.3%. In 9 cases it was at least 10%. The average sits above the median because a few high values pull it up. The typical figure is 5.7%.
- In euros: a median of €29.79, an average of €54.69, a maximum of €197.16.
- Most US hits were hotels in Greece (10) and Italy (5), plus Portugal, Germany and Tanzania (3 each).
- All 7 US hits that were checked with a second fetch were stable. That is 7 of 31, not all of them.
Examples confirmed as stable: a hotel in Greece €134.23 (6.3%) cheaper from the United States, a hotel in Sri Lanka €166.73 (6.4%) cheaper, a hotel in Italy 12.3% cheaper (€18.89). The savings are mostly modest. The 27.3% outlier is the exception.
In the full log from 16 Sep the United States was ahead 42 times, average 6.7%, median 5.5%, maximum also 27.3%. The 31 hits on this page are the narrower stretch from 19 Sep.
Why the United States?
That is not settled. Hotels can set discounts for individual countries or regions (Booking.com for Partners), for example to attract guests from the United States. Because the United States is not in the EU, the EU Geo-blocking Regulation does not apply (Verbraucherzentrale, EUR-Lex). A hotel in Greece may therefore show visitors from the United States a different price than visitors from Germany. Whether it does, we only measure for the specific room.
Caveats
- Watch the final price: in the United States prices are often shown without taxes. GeoRates always compares including them; when you book, you have to check yourself.
- If you pay in US dollars, card fees can eat part of the saving. A median of €29.79 disappears quickly.
- Do not book rates that say “residents of the United States only”.
How to book a US price
- Check the hotel on GeoRates. Only if the United States is ahead is the rest worth doing.
- Connect a VPN to a US server and open Booking.com in a private window.
- Check the room, the board, the cancellation terms and the total price including taxes.
- Pay in USD with a card that has no foreign-currency fee, or pay in euros, whichever final amount is lower.

Frequently asked questions
Is Booking.com cheaper from the United States?
In the 140 checks from 19 Sep 2026 the United States was the most frequent bargain country: 31 times, median 5.7% cheaper. Frequent does not mean every booking is noticeably cheaper.
Does that also apply to hotels in Europe?
In this window, yes, and often: 10 of the 31 hits were hotels in Greece, 5 were hotels in Italy. The EU geo-blocking rule applies only inside the EU, not against the United States.
How reliable are the US prices?
All 7 hits that were checked with a second fetch were stable. The other 24 were not double-checked. Check again shortly before you book anyway.
Why does the US price look lower on Booking at first?
In the United States prices are often shown without taxes. Always compare the final price. GeoRates includes taxes and fees.
Do I need a VPN to compare?
No. GeoRates fetches the countries for you. You need a VPN with a server in the United States only if you want to book the price you found yourself.
